How old is the Castle?

0

William the Conqueror ordered a Castle to be constructed here in 1067, and the first sandstone building was constructed circa 1150. By circa 1430 the Castle was mainly a ruin, but from 1565 the main hall was converted into a town house, with substantial works undertaken by Thomas Telford in the 1780s. The Shropshire Horticultural Society purchased the Castle in the 1920’s and given to the Corporation of Shrewsbury for the Council Chambers until the 1970’s. In 1985 it first housed the Shropshire Regimental Museum, and was refitted 1992-1995 after a terrorist bomb attack.
