How old does a child have to be before being allowed to play organized, competitive hockey?
There is no set age that child is required to reach prior to playing competitive hockey. In USA Hockey, any player under the age of 8 is eligible to play at the Mite level. Some areas use an Atom classification which can be younger or the same age bracket but just less experienced. The equivalent Hockey Canada age bracket is listed as ages 7 and under. Speaking as both a parent and a former coach, I think many parents are a little too eager and concerned about getting kids into “competitive” games as opposed to getting them into an environment where they can learn the skills necessary to actually be competitive.
