How often to change Castrol Syntec Synthetic oil? I heard you can wait longer than normal oil?
Independent ASTM Certified Laboratory Testing of the new Mobil 1 Extended Performance vs. AMSOIL (and nine other major brand name motor oils) has been completed. AMSOIL is the clear winner.
Mobil 1 EP Evaporates 38% Faster Than AMSOIL, Mobil 1 EP Allows 18% More
Cold Start Friction and Mobil 1 EP Allows 22% MORE Wear
In addition, on the TFOUT test, the "Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test" (ASTM D-
4742), which provides a very good correlation to the drain interval
capability of an oil, AMSOIL passed the 500 minute cut-off mark with flying
colors and still going strong, while Mobil 1 Extended Performance fell
short at only 469 minutes. Once again, we say that Mobil 1 is a good
quality product, however it does not compare to AMSOIL and the test data
clearly shows this.
AMSOIL offers superior wear protection, easier cold starting, less high
temperature evaporation and longer guaranteed drain intervals of 25,000
miles/1-year (or 25,000 miles 1-year with the AMSOIL Severe Service 0W-30).
AMSOIL also offers 25,000 mile/1-year Absolute Efficiency Ea Oil Filters to
compliment the AMSOIL 25,000 mile/1-year, or 35,000 mile1-year line of
synthetic motor oils.
In this day and age of high performance extended drain interval synthetic lubricants, the 3000 mile petroleum oil change is, in our personal opinion, a plan to get consumers to change their oil more often and generate increased revenue. Petroleum oil has been proven to allow increased wear rates (based on comprehensive independent ISO certified ASTM laboratory test data) when compared to a premium quality synthetic oil like AMSOIL. When things wear, they eventually have to be serviced and/or replaced, and that means you then have to buy a new vehicle or other piece of equipment more often.

Could using AMSOIL motor oil void your new vehicle warranty?
Absolutely not. Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure. AMSOIL exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure. Even so, AMSOIL has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the Federally mandated Magnuson-Moss act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.
If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using AMSOIL will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to AMSOIL Technical Services (AMSOIl Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won’t provide the statement in writing send AMSOIL Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. AMSOIL will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence. A sample of this letter is included below.

Typically most people say that you can go longer between oil changes if you use a full synthetic oil however with my experience in the automotive service industry, we do not recommend going much more than 4-5000 miles as even synthetic oil breaks down and develop sludge in the engine. What most people don’t realize is that synthetic oil’s main purpose is to displace heat from the friction caused by the engine’s moving parts. Synthetic oil also has alot of additives that can prolong the oil’s life but going 10,000 miles between oil changes is ludacris.
I don’t know that Castrol recommends extended drains with Syntec. Look into Amsoil synthetics if you want to go to once a year oil changes.
