How often should I change the rubber seawater pump impeller?
The seawater pump impeller should be inspected for damage and/or wear on an annual basis. We recommend removing the impeller and leaving it out of the pump housing during winter storage. If the impeller looks worn, burned or damaged, it should be replaced. A telltale indication that the impeller should be replaced is if the engine temperature on the temperature gauge in your boat starts creeping higher than normal. If you run your boat aground or in very shallow water or if you pick up a plastic bag over your water intake, the impeller should be inspected and replaced if damaged. We suggest that you keep a spare impeller and gasket and some basic tools onboard your boat in case you damage an impeller. NEVER run your engine without it being in the water or without water supplied to the engine.
