How often should a chinchilla bathe?

An easy answer. A sand bath should be available at all times. The dust should be sieved each day and completely changed once a week. When replenished, add a level teaspoon of athlete’s foot powder. This prevents fungus and will cure said if already apparent. The dust bath is a grooming device for a chinchilla which removes dead hair when they roll in it. Personally, I keep my dust bath outside the cages. Being so fine, it gets everywhere so it is not a good idea to keep it in the cage as it will get into their food and water. My chinchillas are out playing in their own special room all day and have access to the bath then. If you cannot let your chinchillas out for this amount of time, ensure the dust bath is available when they do come out for exercise. Having a dust bath available at all times mimics what the chinchilla would have in the wild.
