How often do the physicians become certified with the ABMS?
• Physicians who obtained lifetime certification before time-limited certificates were implemented remain board certified whether or not they choose to become recertified. • All member boards have now implemented time-limited certificates around 1990 which require diplomates to renew their certification. • Depending upon the individual board, all diplomates are recertified for a 6 to 10 year period. • The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a voluntary, annual recertification, in addition to the 6-year certificate.
