How often do servers that connect between routing groups communicate link state updates? Are messages used?
In the case of link state updates tunneled through SMTP, messages are not used. Instead, when there is an update, a connection is created to the neighboring routing group. During the course of that connection, the link state information is transferred. In fact, even if there is no new information on the source side, during each SMTP transmission between two Exchange 2000 servers in the same organization, they will exchange link state information. In the case of link state updates through X.400 between two Exchange 2000 servers, a “dummy message” is created that includes the link state update information.
