How often do pupils ‘fail’ ?
Due to the intense competition for pupillage, it is quite unusual for a pupil to ‘fail’ any component of their pupillage training. Standards are however more carefully defined in the Pupillage Handbook (Appendix H) and signing off a pupil must relate to these standards, rather than simply as ‘time served’ or ‘tasks completed’ by pupils. Where pupils have been unsuccessful, this is most often on Inns’ training courses (problems with advocacy or skeleton arguments being the most common). If a pupil is supported by the ATO, Inn and/or circuit, repeats are normally possible and the situation may be retrieved.
