How often do Lions attack and how?
The main prey of lions are large ungulates (hoofed mammals) such as buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. They hunt whenever they are hungry, which depends on how recent their last kill was and how large it was, and will also take an opportunity that presents itself. They are ambush predators, meaning that they creep up on their prey and take it by surprise. Since they work as a team, they are able to set up traps for their prey – for example, one will chase the prey towards another who is lying in wait. When they are close enough, they leap on the prey animal, holding on with their claws, and pull it to the ground with their enormous strength. They may also kick its hind legs out from under it with their own hind legs. They kill by biting the throat of the prey, holding its windpipe closed so that it cannot breathe and suffocates. As with most predators, most hunts are unsuccessful – that is, they do not end in a kill. For this reason, lions may only eat once a week or so. They are designed
