How often are women with disabilities employed in computer-related jobs?
Women, with and without disabilities, have fewer jobs in the emerging computer industry. As shown in the chart below, women as a group also work more often in the lower-paying jobs as computer equipment operators than in the more lucrative jobs as computer programmers or scientists. Fewer women with disabilities work as computer operators (28,700, or 8.3% of women in the job category), compared to 40,000 men with disabilities (14.2% of men in the category). Computer programming employs only about 9,300 women with disabilities, or 5.6% of women in the category. Many more men with disabilities work as computer programmers (45,400 men or 10.3% of men in the category). Approximately 51,400 women with disabilities work as computer scientists, representing 16.8% of the women in the category. By comparison, about 58,000 men with disabilities work as computer scientists, but they represent only 7.5% of men working in this category.
