How often are trees pruned and trimmed?
City owned trees are pruned on a two year cycle to remove branches and limbs that pose a threat to public safety, either because limbs hang above the road surface or foliage interferes with traffic signs or overhead utilities. Trees on parkways or rights-of-way adjacent to private property are the responsibiltiy of the property to maintain. According to the Manhattan Beach Municipal Code, it is ” …the duty of all owners and persons having possession and control of real property within the City to cultivate and care for and provide complete maintenance of all trees, shrubs, lawns and ground covers now or hereafter planted or set out within any of the streets, avenues, highways and parkways adjacent to their real properties (Title 7, Chapter 8.105 Maintenance).” Trees sometimes have to be removed if they have roots which push up sidewalks, curbs, gutters or interfere with various underground utilities or sub structures.
