How must the education system be changed to meet the challenges of the new world economy?
I don’t think they raise the bar for achievement high enough. The quality of instruction and high expectations (for success) are not there. Half of the high school graduates in Mauritius wouldn’t be able to solve a complex business problem. The education must move away fort the CPE exams and do it quickly. They should fire the teachers and put in place a non-British style system. Even the British are moving away form their old system – and also resolve the language issue. I found that one-third of the kids in the schools don’t know English (and if they are going to create an economy based on IT, English skills are essential). The IT program of teaching computer skills needs to expand. I noticed that there are now only two computers per school, and one is usually broken, while the principals use the other.
