How much would it cost to get a brace to fix the gap between my 2 front teeth?
It’s true that you get braces for free if you have a need for it – go to your dentist and tell them that you’re concerned about the gap, and they’ll refer you to an orthodontist. I have had braces twice, both times free – the second time it was pretty much cosmetic, so you’ll probably be covered too. You’d most likely need a fixed brace (‘traintracks’) – you don’t get the fancy alternatives like tooth-coloured brackets or lingual braces on the NHS. They’d be attached to just about all of your teeth to make them more stable, and would probably need to be on for 12-18 months at the very least. The only problem is that gaps between front teeth have a tendency to come back after braces, so you might need to wear retainers for a long time (more than 1 year), or have a retainer bonded onto the back of your teeth. They will also look at the cause of the gap – some people have it because the frenum that attaches the top lip to the jaw is too low, and if this is the case you may need to have it
