For the non-engineering answer, consult a real estate guide for the UK. With the world economies in their dismal state, many properties can be purchased for relatively low prices. But, don’t forget that the acquisition cost of the castle might be cheap compared to the maintenance and upkeep costs. I’ve never owned a castle, but I would guess that even a free castle — similar to a “free” sailboat — is not, in fact, free.
