How much would backpacking across Europe cost?
$40 a day is a very conservative estimate considering a hostel bunk bed will usually run in the range of $20-25 a night (per person), and food/incidental/leisure expenses. You can buy food from grocery stores to save money and split costs whenever possible, but the remaining $15-20 (out of the $40 per day) doesn’t leave much for wanting. Its doable, but you’d be on the edge of eating the leather off your belt at the end of a month of living like that. Then you also have to understand there will be lots of incidental costs you cannot expect — for instance, having to buy medication, a new pair of shoes, phone credit, etc. And different countries will be more expensive than others; England, Germany, France and Amsterdam are expensive countries. Italy and Greece are cheaper, but still more expensive than the United States. You can get around Europe very easily by train, metro, and plane. Keep in mind though … these all cost money as well.
