How much would a train journey cost in the past?
At that time, in the UK, there was a law that said that at least once a day, a train should be available stopping at all stations and charging no more than one penny per mile (that’s an old penny, worth about 0.4 post-decimalisation pence). So in other words, a local train journey of ten miles could be expected to cost 10d. This is very much a rough rule – for example First Class tickets would be at least twice as much; an express train would be more expensive; and a return ticket would typically be about one and a half times the cost of a single between the same two stations.
