How much will the war cost us, Mr. Secretary?
As we know, the true cost of a war is much more than something measured in dollars. But let’s look at the dollars for a moment. See here how, in February 2003, politicians overruled miltary experts on the personnel and monetary requirements for the upcoming invasion of Iraq. NY Times: “Mr. Wolfowitz spent much of the [Congressional] hearing knocking down published estimates of the costs of war and rebuilding, saying the upper range of $95 billion was too high” Congress was convinced at the time that the Bush administration was aware of much more realistic cost ranges and in possession of far higher cost estimates from the US military. But “asked whether he would release such ranges to permit a useful public debate on the subject, Mr. Rumsfeld said, “I’ve already decided that. It’s not useful.” November 2005: Cost of military operations in Iraq reaches $251 billion. Including Afghanistan and related security costs, Congress has already allocated $387 billion.
