That depends on what kind and where you buy it. Pet stores usually sell “feeder” rats($10 and up). Rats that are bred to be a food source. There are people who breed fancy rats but they can be more expensive. (Price depends on breed and markings) Either way, I would recommend getting one that is still a pup though. That gives them enough time to imprint on you. You HAVE to handle them every day (15mins. +) If you don’t they can become aggressive and biters. A rat can bite through your finger so you don’t want a biter. They are also social animals so if you are going to get one you might as well get two. I recommend two males of the same litter. Males are little more mellow then females. Females are very adventurous and mischievous. You also want to read some books about having rats if you’ve never had one before.
