How much wattage does a typical ceiling fan consume?
746 watts equals 1 horsepower. Ceiling fans generally have rather small motors – it takes them a while to get up to speed. I would say most have a 1/10 hp or less motor. That is about 75 watts – about the wattage of a moderately bright incandescent bulb. There will be a horsepower or wattage rating on the name plate. They are a very energy efficient way to circulate air, and increase the effectiveness of heating or cooling, as heat tends to collect at the ceiling, and cool air at the floor. If the lights are on, add the wattages of the lights. It does take more wattage to run them faster, as there is more air resistance. They still consume much less electricity than an air conditioner, which has a fluid compressor (which chews up watts).
