How much water seeps through the tailings into the groundwater?
We know that the tailings allow some water to pass through them into the natural gravel aquifers below them. As water passes through the tailings, it may become contaminated. Consequently, the long term remediation and closure plan includes collecting and treating contaminated groundwater for 100s of years.
