How much water falls over Niagara?
The thundering roar of the tumbling waters can be heard from afar. Here at the famous Niagara Falls the river plunges down as much as 167 feet a distance as high as 30 men standing on each other’s heads. The Niagara River carries the waters of Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and there is more water during the seasons of rains and melting snows. On an average day of the year, about 500,000 tons of water spill over the falls every minute. This is equal to about 15 million cubic feet enough water to fill 15 million square containers measuring one foot on each side. There are four quarts of water in a gallon, and it might be easier to imagine this water in quart milk bottles. Every second, Niagara spills enough water to fill about 10 billion of these bottles.
