How much water does the human body require each day?

Assuming a glass is about half a pint, then 8 glasses gives you very roughly 2 litres. But that’s only a very vague guideline – there’s no real ‘average’ amount, because there’s no ‘average’ human body. Drink when you’re thirsty, naturally. But remember that thirst is your body’s way of telling you that hydration levels are running below the optimum, and that it NEEDS water. The best policy is to keep a ready supply of water and sip at it regularly, That way you stay hydrated without needing to go to the loo every five minutes, but you’ll never feel particularly thirsty. I learned this a few years ago when I was posted on a job which involved working long hours in hot, humid conditions in late summer. I got through about 4 litres of bottled water each day but didn’t need to visit the loo any more than usual. But I tell you what – all that water, combined with good sleep and healthy food, left me feeling really good!
