it is quite straight forward to travel between Vietnam and either Laos or Cambodia. You HAVE to obtain a visa in advance before going to Vietnam, they will not let you board the aircraft in or let you over the border without one. You can obtain the visa on arrival at most border crossings in to Laos now and also Cambodia. Best crossing point from Vietnam in to Cambodia overland is near Chau Doc, and best place to cross from Laos in Vietnam is in to Diem Bien Phu. The bus rides are many hours long and rather tedious, better to spend US$100 and fly in.
