Two different plans are under study for visiting Mars. The first involves a 30-day stay on the planet and a total 600+ day mission; and the second involves a 450+ day stay on the planet and a total 900+ day mission. The reason for the sizeable difference in surface stay length is the fact that the Earth and Mars are only in opposition to each other every 26 months.
