How much time should I spend on calculus problems before looking at the solution manual?
You should work on it until you understand that you have the right answer without ever looking in the manual. If you aren’t sure, go to the instructor BEFORE class and tell him/her what you have been trying and why you do not understand what you should be doing. They SHOULD work with you until you do understand it. Do not be afraid to ask for help after you have worked on it coming after it every which way you can. IF you have honestly tried to work on something in any classroom setting and just can’t figure it out, go talk to the instructor before it is due. Be prepared to show the instructor all the work you have done; they will need that to know that you are not tring to just avoid turning in something you haven’t worked on. If you are able to show that you have worked on something approaching it from all angles you can think of, and then discuss it with the instructor prior to it actually being due (if in high school this might mean going in before school starts), if the instructor
