How much time is spent on clinical teaching?
One day per week is dedicated to clinical teaching in term 1; this takes place at the nearby Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD). Clinical teaching involves a range of activities: bedside teaching on in-patients, tutorials on the differential diagnosis of common problems in clinical tropical medicine and the management of specific tropical diseases, and HTD’s clinical meetings, which usually focus on discussion of cases seen recently at HTD. After term 1, it depends on individual study unit choice – those who choose to take all the DTM&H study units will again spend one day a week on clinical teaching in term 2, and additional sessions are organised at other infectious / tropical diseases units in London. At HTD we see a very wide range of tropical diseases from all over the world: this range is probably unique. However keep in mind that we are in London, and so we do not have large numbers of patients with tropical diseases on the ward at any one time.
