How much space does a photovoltaic system need?
Depending on the region, one square foot of a typical photovoltaic (PV or solar electric) panel will produce 10 watts of power in full sunlight. That’s a good rule of thumb to calculate approximately how much area you will need. As an example, a typical 4,000 watt (4kW) household system may need 400 – 800 square feet of area, depending on the type of PV panels used. However, we don’t necessarily recommend that you try to replace your entire electric demand with solar with your first installation. A more balanced approach is to install enough capacity to take over between 30% and 50% of your needs, thus giving you more control over your energy budget and reducing the dramatic amount of carbon dioxide and mercury being pumped into the air we all breathe.
