How much seawater does it take to make 25 to 50 million gallons of drinking water?
Based on the salinity of the Atlantic Ocean, it is estimated that the each gallon of seawater treated will yield 40-45 percent drinking water, leaving 55-60 percent concentrated seawater. Given that recovery rate, the plant will be designed to treat two-and-a-half times the capacity of drinking water needed. It would take 63 million gallons per day (mgd) of seawater to produce 25 mgd of drinking water. It would take 125 mgd of seawater to produce 50 mgd of drinking water.
