How much prestige are pop can tabs worth?
We have seen a number of drives where members collect can tabs from soda and/or beer cans for one charity or another. We have also noticed that the prestige awards for these drives vary wildly around the country, often bordering on excessive. A good guideline for awarding prestige for this type of drive is 1 point per roughly 20 can tabs. This seems like very little, but keep in mind that this is generally an activity with no cost to the member, requires very little time, and has a relatively small benefit for the charity in question. Of course, it does add up, and can eventually be a significant amount – just like the prestige awards. To be on the safe side, it is probably helpful to mention in your prestige log roughly how many can tabs you did donate (even “a ziplock bag full” is better than no notes at all). This is not required, but will save time as we will probably ask when it goes to a national review.
