How much petrol does it take to produce one liter of ethanol?
None. Ethanol is not made from oil or petrol or using either one, Ethanol is alcohol, made from plants containing starch/sugar by the action of yeasts. Heating the fermented mash to cause the alcohol to evaporate into a condenser is called distillation. Has been used with whiskey for centuries. The fuel for heating the mash can be anything that burns, wood, peat, coal, waste plants, coal, gas or furnace oil, even solar heat can be used. The ideal vehicle would be a plug-in electric car for short trips, which carried an on-board steam powered generator for long trips, which would increase the mileage and lower the cost.
