How much notice must an employee give of his or her intention to take family or medical leave?

If leave is foreseeable based on a birth, adoption or planned medical treatment, an employee must give the employer 30 days’ notice of his or her intention to take leave. If leave is not foreseeable, the employee must provide such notice “as is practicable.
