How much more efficient would a new furnace be?
There are two types of heating units. One is a boiler, the other a furnace. A boiler heats water that circulates through radiators in your home. A furnace heats air that is blown through ducts in your home. Either one can be anywhere form 85% to 95% efficient. I am supposing you have a forced air furnace. Most furnaces, these days are very energy efficient. A mid cost furnace that is 90% efficient is the route you may wish to take. Retrofitting exsisting ducting to the new furnace has some costs, as well. Call about three or four heating specialists for quotes. You may also want to include a seperate quote for Air conditioning. It is not that difficult to retrofit a condenser coil in with the new furnace. The difference in cost from 90% to 95% is not that great, really. What you will notice is the large savings in fuel costs! In some areas, consumers who install a 95% efficinet heating unit, can also apply for a government or utility rebate to help offset the costs of installation. You
