How much more efficient are SSL luminaires compared to incandescent and fluorescent lighting?
SSL luminaires can be more efficient than fixtures that use incandescents or fluorescent light bulbs. Some SSL luminaires may not be more efficient than conventional products, though. ENERGY STAR-qualified SSL luminaires are at least 75 percent more efficient than fixtures that use incandescent light bulbs. The ENERGY STAR criteria for SSL luminaires was benchmarked to the efficiency of fluorescent fixtures after taking light loss due to fixture design into account. SSL luminaires use light more efficiently than fixtures that use incandescent or fluorescent bulbs because LEDs emit light in a specific direction. As a result, no energy is wasted to produce light in areas where light is not needed for the intended application.
