How much money does a producing cranberry bog make?
A review of production cost studies for Massachusetts and production statistics shows that cranberries have the potential to produce a reasonable return, depending of the yield and the price. However, because of the high cost of production there is also potential for loss if the production is not properly carried out.. A 1995 study done in Massachusetts showed that the cost of production was $6,850 per acre and the survey participants had an average yield of 144 barrels (bbl) per acre. At an average price of $53.40 per barrel the growers realized a profit of $839 per acre. Average yields across the U.S. ranged from 150 bbl/acre (Wisconsin) to 100 bbl/acre (Oregon). Although yields have been reported as high as 400 bbl/acre for individual fields, this is clearly the exception. In terms of price received for the product, there appears to be short term increase. Ocean Spray is presently buying cranberries for $55 to $60 a barrel. Independent buyers are offering $83. The standard unit of p
