Well of course the answer is “It varies” It will depend upon a number of factors. Some breeds give more than others. Friesans (the black and white ones) are large beasts and generally produce a greater quantity of milk. Jersey cows are smaller but give a higher percentage of butter fat in the milk. Generally speaking a cow that is free to range will burn up more energy than one that is fed without walking about and so will produce less milk. Having said that it must be remembered that cows produce milk to feed a calf so after it has just given birth it will be at its maximum production dwindling off until the cow is mated and starts a new cycle.
