Some light is required for the camera to render an image. On a moonless night, the light from a flashlight or from an onboard floodlight or work light will be enough to allow the See Cannon to function and provide useful images. In port, reflected lights from the docks will be enough light.

Some light is required for the camera to render an image. On a moonless night, any ambient light such as running lights, shore lights, or even moon and star light, can render high quality video images.
