How much land will be converted for dairy farming?
No one knows at the moment. However, it is likely that only a part of the Hurunui District will be suitable for dairy farming due to its topography and soil types. Less than 25% of farmers surveyed in 2008 indicated they would consider dairying. It is more likely that farmers will use the ability to irrigate to diversify their operations. This will include cropping and sheep, beef, deer and pig farming. Other growth areas could be viticulture, horticulture or specialist foods.
