How much is spent on campaign costs and overhead?
Because of its large force of volunteer workers, United Way maintains very low overhead costs. Of each dollar pledged, only 12 cents goes to administration, and 5 cents goes to campaign costs. The National Charities Information Bureau suggests that charities with 40% overhead costs or lower are effective. This 17% overhead is very low in comparison with many charities.
