How much is it going to cost to build a new youth shelter?
At this time, all our work has been in concept stages so we do not have a definitive cost plan for the expanded phase of proposed transitional housing. Today, it is premature to speculate on an exact figure but we are working closely with architects Goodman and Associates to understand our options for converting existing space, developing a new space and so on. • How old will the youth staying at the Durham Youth Housing facility be and will it be co-ed? The youth we want to help are age 16 to 24 and in some cases up to 29 years of age. They are youth who are homeless with no resources and at risk of continued living on the streets. Yes, the DYHSS shelter will be co-ed with strict security, rules and regulations for guests accessing temporary shelter or any of our proposed services. • How will the Durham Region support a youth shelter? The Region of Durham is providing per diem funding ($44.75 per bed per day) for the interim 10-bed shelter. Also, with the support of the Region of Durh
