How much is currently known about evasions?
Evasion techniques have been known since the mid 1990s, and are the focus of many industry conferences such as Black Hat and Shmoo Con. Tim Newsham and Thomas H. Ptacek delivered one of the first comprehensive descriptions in a technical report in 1998. More recent notable research has been conducted by H.D. Moore with his Metasploit 3.0 project to provide detailed information and code for exploit developers, penetration testers and researchers. In addition, independent 3rd party testing laboratories such as ICSA and NSS Labs dedicate specific test criteria to testing evasion techniques. In a recent NSS Labs test report, 70% of the vendors tested failed the basic evasion vulnerability testing.
