How much is a yard of mulch or dirt or sand?
A cubic yard is quite a lot – a yard by a yard by a yard. I.e. 27 cubic feet. The volume is theoretically easy to measure (though these things rarely sit in one cubic yard cubes). This leads to a conversion to weight, for convenience, though frankly that leaves too much temptation to seel water at a markup. The weight depends a lot on how packed the material is and of course on hot wet it is. A yard of sand and dirt are both quite heavy, and depending upon moisture content don’t weigh that much different. In Washington State a yard of dry dirt is defined for commercial purposes to weight 70-80 pounds per cubic foot, or 1890 to 2160 pounds, while a yard of mud is defined as weighing 2808 to 3024 pounds. http://www.metrokc.gov/dnrp/swd/business/documents/Conversions.pdf A yard of sand is defined for commercial purposes in Connecticut to weigh 2600 pounds (no mention of water content):
