enough that you cannot see the joists running accros the floor of your attic also know as “r30” if you already have some insulation up there you should contact a professional to get blown fiberglass or cellulose(recycled newspaper) in your attic. Blown insulation works much better then batt insulation because it gets into tighter spots that might not be covered by regular insulation. If you think you can do it yourself i believe home depot has a deal where if you buy 20 bags of cellulose you can use there blower free. That will require atleast 1 large truck for the blower and another vehicle that combined obviously can fit the 20 bags.
