The mid 70s were dark times for the U.S. muscle car market, thanks to recently enacted EPA emissions requirements. The 1976 Firebird Trans Am, with a 400 CID (6.6L) engine produced only 185 BHP. http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/pontiac-firebird/pontiac-firebird-history-2.shtml The original 400, introduced in the original Firebird, produced 325 BHP in stock trim. The largest engine available in the ’76 Firebird was the Buick 455, which was rated at 200 BHP. With that mill, the car could run through the 1320 in 16.1 seconds. Pathetic.
