How much historic waste is there to be cleaned up in Port Hope?
(Back to top) Stringent cleanup criteria have been developed for the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). These criteria will be applied to ensure Port Hope properties remediated under the PHAI will be suitable for current and foreseeable unrestricted use, meaning properties will be suitable to build a home, a swimming pool or plant a garden without concern. The estimated total volume of soil and associated historic waste that would be remediated and managed under the PHAI in Port Hope is about 1.5 million cubic metres. Applying these criteria will ensure that the cleanup will be conducted “once and for all”. Port Hope citizens can have confidence that the low-level radioactive waste on their properties and on public lands will have been cleaned up and safely managed for generations to come. The cleanup criteria meet the requirements of the Legal Agreement and have been accepted by the Municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington, as well as by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Natura
