It is obviously an improvement to have a more open and transparent system for appointments at all levels. But everything then depends upon the tools which are used to select the best from among the available candidates and the accuracy of the judgments which are made. This is still a work in progress and perhaps it always will be. Does it feel a bit isolated being the only female? My colleagues are all very friendly and kind. They are all very different from one another (just as women are very different from one another) and those differences are usually more apparent than the difference of gender. I do sometimes feel that there are things which they know or take for granted which I do not know or take for granted. But whether that’s because they are men, or because they were all successful barristers and many have known one another for a long time, I cannot tell. I do feel quite at home here but would love to have some female company on the court. Will you be altering the title of the
