How much groundwater is allocated in the Great Artesian Basin – Western Groundwater Management Unit, and for what purpose?
Allocation Methods and Policy: GAB groundwater allocations must comply with that of the respective State / Territory legislation. Pertinent legislation for the Western (NT) zone includes the Water Act 1992 for the Northern Territory. The average annual GAB groundwater abstraction was estimated at 570 ML/yr for the Western (NT) zone based on broad-scale investigations consistent with the other GMUs, and thus expressed with a low level of confidence. It comprised of about 550 ML/yr for rural supply, a possible 10 ML/yr for irrigation supply, and a possible 10 ML/yr for Urban/Industrial supply (which includes town water supply). These abstractions have been assumed equal to annual allocations within the GMU. Note that six artesian bores were identified in this GMU, and one of these bores (an abandoned oil well bore) has been identified as possibly free flowing up to 1600 ML/yr to the environment. Whilst for audit purposes, the total average annual abstraction was estimated at 570 ML/yr, t
