How much grooming do Belgian Shepherds need?
The Malinois needs only occasional brushing, but Groenendaels and Tervurens have “feathering” needs to be combed to avoid mats and tangles. Some individuals have minimal feathering, while others have heavy feathering. The worst places for mats and tangles are behind their ears, behind their front legs (in their “armpits”), and on their chest, stomach, and groin. Their legs and paws also need to be kept combed, and their tail. However, during shedding season (see the next question), Groenendaels, Tervuerens, and Malinois should be brushed every day to pull out the worst of the dead hair so less of it ends up on your floor and furniture. The Laekenois needs occasional brushing, but more importantly, his rough-ish coat must be trimmed or clipped every few months.
