How much fuel is used by a space shuttle?
Er . . . someone’s being “pompeious.” The space shuttle carries a total of about 1,607,185 pounds of liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, hydrazine, monomethylhydrazine, and nitrogen tetroxide. That’s a smidge more than “a half cup both ways.” True, the orbiter only uses a tiny bit of fuel to steer during reentry because it’s actually just falling out of the sky. But the uphill ride requires a whole lotta fuel. It’s all right here: http://www.nasa.gov/…/shuttle_faq.
