How much flexibility will be allowed in the senior experience? Will the specific requirements for student writing and speaking be as stringent as those for current critical thinking classes?
This has not been discussed extensively by the CCTF. Since these are envisioned to be capstone courses in the major, we anticipate that departments and programs will be afforded considerable flexibility in determining what constitutes a valid capstone experience. The requirement for a relatively small class size implies active engagement of the students and allows for rigorous methods of evaluation, but there are no specific requirements for student writing or speaking. Will the senior experience be strictly limited to a group classroom experience? As an extreme example, will a student who completes a laboratory research project, writes an Honors thesis based on that research, makes an oral presentation of the research, and is recommended for Honors after an oral examination be considered to have met the senior experience requirement. The general question of whether or not successful completion and defense of an Honors thesis will satisfy the capstone experience will need to be address
