How much energy does a hypernova explosion release?
A hypernova explosion typically has a mechanical energy output of ~ 10^53 ergs, or about a factor of 100 greater than a supernova. If a hypernova releases much of the energy in a few to a few thousands of seconds, a timescale of a typical Gamma-ray burst, the energy output rate is then about 10^16-10^19 orders of magnitude greater than that of the Sun.
